Concert Review- Brand New
Concert Review by: Travis Cahill, Joe Newman, Derek Younger & Alex Weiss
With an audience of over 1,500 fans, it was only a short wait in line before getting into the Salt Lake City Convention Center on a cold Friday night. The venue ended up having concrete walls and floor. About a half hour later the opening band, Dusty Rhodes and the River Band, got on stage and began their set. The band had a sort of folk/indie rock sound. The sound engineer quickly got the band dialed in and the sound set for the room. Dusty Rhodes kept the attention of most the crowd until the last song. Up next was Manchester Orchestra, hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. Andy Hull, lead vocalist/guitarist/song writer, writes a refreshing type of sound that is not terribly common (recommended if you like Kevin Devine, The Gaslight Anthem, or just great music). Manchester Orchestra played an amazing and very emotional forty-five minute set; Jesse Lacey even came on stage for “Where Have You Been” and joined Andy on the mic. Both opening acts kept the crowned entertained and enthused while they played.
Finally it was time for Brand New to take the stage. As the lights dimmed and the silhouette of a man approached the microphone, the audience burst into cheers. Jessy Lacey started strumming his guitar and the audience started singing along with Soco Amaretto. A lot of their set did consist of songs from their recently released album Daisy, but they did not disappoint long time fans by playing songs off of their older albums. Brand New played for about an hour and forty-five minutes, playing songs off of almost all of their albums. They even played a cover of “My Own Worst Enemy” before surprising the crowd with their closing song off their debut album released back in 2001. This show was defiantly worth the wait from their cancelled show back in October of 2009 due to band illness.
