Playing western rock music is forbidden in Iran, but when a band is as good as Hypernova, migrating to New York in order to continue producing music makes perfect sense.
Hypernova might be shoehorned into “indie rock” or “dance punk,” but neither of those terms does them justice. Live, they are a mix of gnarly distorted bass guitar, slashing power chords, angular leads, propulsive drums, ethereal keyboards and deep, moody vocals. Each song is the perfect length, contains a strong hook and is relentlessly energetic and fun.
Though their show at Neurolux wasn’t packed, Hypernova played like they were performing in front of a full house. Simply put, Hypernova outshines many of their contemporaries by rocking harder and cutting out the filler that many so-called “new wave” or “post punk” revival bands rely upon. Hypernova sounds fresh and furious.
Through the Chaos is available here.
