By Dusty Aunan – Music Director, Producer: What The Folk

A drummer that does not quit is just one of the tricks Mousy Brown has up their sleeves on their first LP. These Boise local boys whip up funky rock that falls on the pleasing side of the experimental line.

You can hear the tenacity and urgency in the recording, sounding much like a live show with the crowd on mute. Bronze Turbo’s progressive mix acts as the sixth member of the band. It keeps the listening experience miles from stale. As much as I wish track 2, “Interlude”, wasn’t called “Interlude”, I can’t deny how well it lives up to its name. For fifty nine seconds drums and saxophone compete for your attention (everybody wins) then simmer as the feel-good guitar rhythm of track 3, “Moonwalker” appears.

“Moonwalker” shines with handclap grooves and twinkling keyboards. Vocalist Steven Toney belts “Around the world in ninety days is what I was trying, what I was trying to do”. “Jared The Gray” is Bronze Turbo at its most furious, but none of the record’s dance-ability is lost in the harsh tone. Regardless, that track is followed by “Prelude”, the sonic equivalent to a back rub with plenty of “oh oh oh’s” and “ooh ooh ooh’s” to put you back in the right place.

Album standouts include “The 115”, “Moonwalker”, “Breathe Easily”, “Safe and Sure”, and “Jared The Gray”.

Mousy Brown plays The Reef with Junior Rocket Scientist on January 27th. Show starts at 9 pm and is FREE.

You can pick up their new album Bronze Turbo here , on iTunes, or at their live shows.
