Saturday, June 23rd at The Shredder, was the first Hip Hop Roots Boise. No doubt the beginning of something truly great for the Hip Hop community here in Idaho. The line up consisted of Burnell Washburn, Percussive Tongues, Customary, Toki Wright and of course DJ Auz holding it down.
The caliber of talent here in Boise is mind blowing. Hip-Hop is alive and well, and this concert was a great opportunity to show the local community just that. Everyones performance’s were super fresh and every MC was excited to be there and be part the beginning of Boise’s Hip Hop Roots chapter.
Burnell Washburn did his thing on stage. He is a touring Hip Hop feind who loves what he does. As a member of the audience this makes all the difference, and kept the audience hyped. He is originally from Salt Lake City so he brought that flavor to our Boise front.
Our very own local group Percussive Tongues performance was a mix of all things hip hop. It varied from songs that sounded like I was sitting in on a poetry reading, (spoken word is beautiful) to the rough in your face styles of rhyming that seem to be more common as of late. This is a powerful duo. Watch out!
Customary is an all around artist. He a brilliant lyricist and his tracks are meaningful. This is not Rap, its Hip Hop folks. Get with it. Customary does not only MC he also produces. He produces his own instrumentals and videos, and from what I hear is working on keeping the progress moving. This is a guy that is truly dedicated to his craft. If his performance wasn’t enough for you, he left stacks of free cds at the venue for everyone. Definitely took advantage of that!
Toki Wright, our headliner of the night was brilliant as expected. He is currently signed with Rhymsayers who has signed others like Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, and MF Doom to name a few.
The first Hip Hop Roots Boise is gone, done, fin, but incase you missed this one, just know there will be one every month! The Hip Hop scene in Boise is blowing up and you can be a part of it! Do not miss the next Hip Hop Roots event you are going to hear about it and be so sorry you did.
