DGC/Interscope recording artists The All-American Rejects kicked off 2012 with the release of “Beekeeper’s Daughter” and took their music on tour, tastily calling it the “Shaken off the Rust Tour”. They left the crowd wanting more here in Boise Idaho after their performance January 22nd . Along with their new album, the band is playing smaller venues this time around for a chance to give back to their fans, and preform for them on a more personal level. After finishing last nights performance, it was great to see the guys come back out and talk one on one with their fans, even get personal pictures with them, and sign CDs.

Loud and proud, just the way any dubstep show should be. The Toronto duo, Zeds Dead, came out with the bass and the oscillations pumping hard as the crowd went wild after every drop. The energy at this show was intense! It was amazing to watch the crowd’s reaction when Zeds Dead dropped their hits such as White Satin and their remix of Eyes On Fire. Not only did Zeds Dead kill it with their music, but their stage presence kept the crowd interested and engaged with the strobe and laser lights syncing with the beat. The main floor was packed with fans jumping and dancing to the bass ultimately leaving the dance floor exhausted at the end. This dubstep duo is a dance floor force to be reckoned with.
Personally speaking, I probably enjoyed the music a little too much as my ears didn’t stop ringing for 2 days although I couldn’t seem to get enough. If these guys roll back through Boise, be sure not to miss their show.

Them Crooked Vulturesis a musical oddity comprised of deeply trained and talented individuals. Fronted by Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, on drums Dave Grohl of Nirvana and Foo Fighters, and John Paul Jones the bassist from Led Zeppelin. This band isn’t hot off the press having played their first show in August of 2009, but did not get the recognition I think it deserves. Their first self-titled album peaked at #12 on the US charts. It does not surprise me that this music was not talked about more. It’s dirty bird rock riffs with seductive unblinking lyrics and superb musical composition is easy to miss if just quickly jumping through the tracks. But the genius is in the details. Homme, Jones and Grohl all have been in bands that need no explanations. They understand the work involved in creating something a cut above. And they came up with a new sound in a genre that has been done to death.
Not taking the band too seriously being a side-project for everyone gave the three of them a very playful style. With tracks entitled, No one loves me and neither do I, and Warsaw or the first breath after you give up, TCV are not here to blow your mind with intellectual depth, although it is present. They want you to just have fun and enjoy the ride.
The various styles incorporated in this album are simply amazing. They will get you moving with a song like Caligulove, and then break everything apart in a liquid dream infused adult theme park ride in Interlude with Ludes. All of the songs work well together keeping a coordinated stylistic theme yet still keep you guessing as to what will hit you next.
There is definitely a classic rock touch to some of the tracks. In Warsaw, at one point you would swear Homme turns into David Bowie. But the guitar riffs are too fresh to be considered classic in any sense. I think if you give TCV a try you will not be disappointed. I personally love this album and look forward to the next one. When people complain about rock it’s because they haven’t heard of Them Crooked Vultures.

Massachusetts’ Defeater seems to have just exploded out of nowhere after the release of their first studio album, Travels, in 2008. They since released Lost Ground in 2009 and most recently Empty Days and Sleepless Nights. Released on March 8th 2011, Empty Days and Sleepless Nights continues the story told in both previously released albums.
